Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you get set up, understand limits, and choose the right path as your usage grows.

A crypto wallet API allows developers to interact with blockchain-based wallets programmatically. Instead of manually managing wallets, teams can automate transactions, retrieve balances, and access real-time onchain data. Safe Wallet API provides a unified interface for: Managing multisig wallets, Fetching token balances and portfolio data, Executing secure transactions, and Integrating with smart contracts and dapps.

You need authenticated access if you are doing more than lightweight testing. In practice, this includes: Building anything used in production, exceeding the shared unauthenticated rate or monthly limits, needing higher or predictable throughput, using webhooks, running dashboards, monitoring, automation, or background jobs. Unauthenticated access is intended for experimentation and low-volume testing only. Once your application grows beyond that, you should switch to an authenticated plan.

Include your API key in the Authorization header as a Bearer token. Generate your key at developer.safe.global. For detailed instructions, see the API Keys & Authentication documentation.

API usage is measured based on how much traffic your application generates, not on what you build. In practice: Usage is counted in API units. One API unit equals one HTTP request. Webhook deliveries do not count toward your quota. Limits apply at the account level, not per API key. Both monthly quota and request rate (RPS) are enforced. All requests count toward your quota regardless of the response status code. Safe does not price or limit usage based on: Number of Safes, number of API keys, endpoints used, or networks accessed. Your usage tier is determined by how often and how much you call the API, not by your app's structure.

Safe enforces usage limits as follows: Rate limiting (RPS): If you exceed your plan's sustained requests per second, requests are temporarily throttled. Monthly quota: Once your monthly quota is reached, all subsequent requests are blocked with a 429 (Too Many Requests) response. You can monitor your remaining quota via the X-RateLimit-Remaining header on every API response. There are no automatic overages and no automatic plan upgrades. To restore access, upgrade your plan or wait for the next billing cycle.

If you're already using the Safe API: Nothing breaks immediately. Existing users are given a transition period before enforcement starts. If your usage is high or production-level, the Safe team will reach out directly with guidance on which plan fits your usage. During the transition period: Your access continues, you can monitor your usage via API response headers, and you have time to migrate to an authenticated plan if needed. If you haven't been contacted, your current usage likely fits within the existing limits.
